Girls Rugby Success
I read with excitement a while back about Mr Dean's U14 basketball successes, Mr Green's running team hitting dizzy heights of county representation, but I still craved more and boy did I get it when I went with Miss Brett's ‘Athletes not Machines’ girls rugby team. Miss Brett has been coaching the girls for only 3 weeks but you would never know that. Led by Tabbie F, Year 9, CFS U14 girls rugby team went into its first competitive fixture like rhinos on a stampede. They faced a very intimidating team from Hayling College but gave a strong indicator of what was to come narrowly loosing 4-3. After some inspirational words from Coach Brett, the girls took their foot of cruise control and hit the turbo button, beating Havant Academy 12-0 with Maddie K scoring 5 tries!
Last game against Oaklands and a frosty reunion for Coach Brett and her old PE teacher! Shaking hands before the game you could feel the tension between both coaches. It could only mean 1 thing…… sparks would fly. The girls took to the field and dished out some hard hits, strong running lines and outstanding support play and got to half time 3-2 down. Coach Brett tried to rally her tiring team but Oaklands who have been playing together for 2 years had a number of fresh legs brought on and in the end they won 6-3.
As an avid rugby fan, I was so impressed and inspired by the teams pursuit of greatness after only 3 training sessions. 2 Hampshire County rugby coaches spoke to a number of our players offering them the chance to try out for club and county rugby, something that will give the girls more motivation to participate and succeed. This was a really good day for CFS and its sport.
Mr Tilling, Head of Year 8 and rugby fan.
