Teaching Chemistry in Nairobi
As part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms project Mr Apsey has travelled to Ofafa Jericho High School in Nairobi to set up a link between their school and ours. The link should allow communication and cultural exchange between the two schools. Later on the year Mr Githaiga the Deputy Head of Ofafa will travel to the UK to experience our education system.
Ofafa is a boy's only state school. Whilst there, Mr Apsey has been teaching chemistry and physics and comparing the teaching style and curriculums of the two countries. He has taught an electrolysis practical to their Year 13, using electrode potentials to predict which ions will discharge from a solution of sodium chloride, earthquakes to Year 10, and water pressure to Year 11. The boys in the school have been committed hardworking and enthusiastic in their learning and been very welcoming. Mr Apsey has also had a chance to taste the local food including Matoke, Ugali and goat stew.
